STC Academic Decathlon

Academic Decathlon is a team competition wherein students compete intellectually against other students with tests in 10 different categories.

    The Team

    A team consists of 9 full time high school students ranging from 9th grade to 12th grade at the same high school. A student is considered a full time student if they are enrolled in four or more class periods per day. Each team has 3 sections: Honor: 3.75-4.00 GPA, Scholastic: 3.00-3.75 GPA, and Varsity: 0.00-2.99. For regional and district competitions there are 2 students in each section, and for state there are 3 students in each section. For state competition the first member of the Honor section alternates will be part of the Honor team and likewise for Scholastic and Varsity. A student is allowed to be in a section higher then their GPA but not in a lower section.

    Our team:

    Each team member competes in all events at each competition. They are also eligible for medals in each event. The top 2 scores for the team in each category count for the team in the team standings. During the state competition, 3 extra events are added: Essay, Interview and Speech.

    The 2006-2007 Season

    Every Academic Decathlon Season there is a new theme. This year the theme is China and Its Influence on the World. The Super Quiz topic is An Introduction to Climatology. Language and Literature includes critical reading, one novel and 6 poems. The featured novel is The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck. Art includes the study of eighteen selected artworks. The Music Category covers traditional Chinese music, Chinese instrument and the influence that Western music has had on Chinese music. Social Science reviews the facts and history of the People's Republic of China. The economics quiz focuses on fundamentals of economics and the macro-and microeconomics of international trade. Math covers the broad fields of general math, algebra, geometry, trigonometry and differential calculus.
