STC Technology Planning Committee Meeting
Notes April 2004
04/27/2003 4:30 PM STC Library
Tech Plan Goals
#1 Systems Management
I. Technology Support
- Helpdesk requests for this period --
msn messenger updates, spotty connection between gym building and
server, requests for projectors, library automation book info upload,
backgrounds, post ghost issues, load Publisher.
II. Technology Integration
- Accelerated Writer -- do we want
to pursue this?
- Upcoming ESU9 and ESU10 Workshops, Conferences
- ESU9 has a 3-day Excel Workshop June 8-10
- ESU10 printout. I'd like to go to the TALM.
III. Information Management:
- Tech Plan revisions timeline --
I have not made the Tech Plan Revisions a priority this year. I believe
that we are still fulfilling goals of the current Technology Plan,
but I after the Mac replacements arrive we should renew revisions.
We also need to view the plan taking into account our inclusion of
or exclusion from the Diocese Education Technology Initiative Fund.
Vicki and I (this summer?) need a retreat weekend to revisit the technology
plan and the curriculum scope and sequence.
- Web site uploading frustrations
-- this problem has been solved. I am pleased to say that Chris Peterson
of ESU9 and the Dicoesean Staff did cooperated to work together to
solve this problem. It did take almost a month for the problem to
be resolved, however, granted it was not an emergency priority item.
- Media Center Automation –
Mrs. Carlin has been entering book information onto disk in her spare
time. I upload the books once every month or two to the AutoLibrarian
Server. We now have over 3200 books in the database. Her goal is to
try to have all books entered in an uploaded by the end of the school
year. It will be my goal to have the circulation component functional
by the beginning of the 2004-2005 school year.
- Diocese Incentive Pay Report --
3rd quarter status: I finished extracting student, staff, and course
information from the WinSchool database, manipulating the data in
Excel and sending out the rough draft to the office on Friday, April
23rd. They will still need to correct all information that is not
entered correctly in WinSchool before it gets sent to the Diocesan
Donor.
- School Information Software --
We've had ongoing discussion regarding our SIS. Currently, we use
WinSchool, and while it is not everything we want, other options may
not be doable. I looked into SASI and while it would be fully supported
by the Dicocese, it is just as clunky and piecemeal as WinSchool.
Chancery SMS 4.2 was released by the same company as WinSchool, runs
on SQL, but has a higher pricetag because it has many more bells and
whistles, but is probably overkill for what we need it to. My true
preference would be PowerSchool due to its real-time, one login interface.
I am checking on a quote, but have heard that it is also a high priced
ticket item. Mrs. Butler and I have decided to schedule another one-on-one
training session with tech support so that they can help us set up
next year's schedule to reflect our middle school quarter classes,
as well as some of the other scheduling deviations that we have. This
will make ME more comfortable in offering K-12 Planet to STC Parents.
- Back-up frustrations -- We did
manage to split up our back up jobs into more manageable chunks of
information, Vicki and I have to laugh at ourselves occasionally.
Thanks to John for removing the checkmark by "paused" to
allow us to back up again.
- Info Management To do list:
Exchange Server -- finish configuring w/ dicocese, implement with
a forward?
Next Year Prep, Implement the K-12 planet module for Win School
Website Redesign
Mac School to Win School History transfer $$?
#2 Technology Curriculum Development
- Tech Prep
- Minigrant Form -- Please see the revised Minigrant Application,
need approval and $$ to take the CIW (CI) Certification course to
teach and test Computer III students to be CIW Certified themselves.
- Invest Conference -- Tech Prep will be sending 2 staff.
- National Tech Prep -- I applied to present with Vicki on our Multimedia
Publications Projects. We will know if we are accepted in May.
- K-12 Curriculum report -- would
like to have other teachers (ideas?) be assigned to teach the 6th and
7th grade computer curriculum. This would open my schedule up to have
one dependable free period as well as to make room for the Computer
I, II, and III classes next year.
- Advanced Students -- Chris and Ryan
competed in the Apple Digies and the UNL CSE Day programming contests.
Chris finished 4th in his individual competition; their team finished
13th. They are currently refurbishing 10 computers Vicki and I bought
at the CCC Used Computer Sale for $15 each. Ideas of what to do with
them?
- New Multimedia Classes -- The integrated
classes are nearing completion of their projects. We are aiming to have
our final presentation of materials on May 11th either during their
normal meeting time or during the awards night ceremony (we'd keep it
short).
- Early Entry report -- STC has been
approved to be a CCC Learning Center for our students. This means that
students can take individualized CCC classes without leaving STC. They
can turn in all assignments and test here at STC.
- Dr. Scheme training and curriculum
for Computer III. This would be to implement a programming curriculum.
Need approval to apply for the free training. Letter and Web page explanation
attached.
- Technology Achievement Awards --
implement next year for awards night. Now that we will have Computers
I, II, and III in place, I would like to recognize all students who
complete Computers III with the Technology Achievement Award.
#3 Hardware and Software
- Machines – Mac Lab to become a Windows Lab
after January?
- Diocese Donor Update -- Fr. Meysenberg
- Idea Boards -- Mrs. Butler Report
- Band software request
- Software and Hardware needs for next year
- To do:
PC to AD office -- we have the computer, but won't give it up out of
the library lab until the others arrive
Music needs: Keyboard/midi configuration
updating and replacing computers revisited
#4 Financial Facilitation

Recycled Cell phone fundraiser – NE Wireless donation brings us
up to 420 points or $168.00 Cash.
